PROGRAMS - The Arts
Arts and Crafts
The arts and crafts rooms at our Club locations are a place where children are able to learn a variety of visual art disciplines, including sketching, sculpting, painting, cartooning, and more. Through group activities, children also develop critical thinking and teamwork skills. With positive motivation and an exposure to the vast world of artistic achievement, members are able to discover abilities they never dreamed of having.
Bomba y Plena
Our newest addition to the arts program, Bomba y Plena, was added in 2012. It is an exciting form of African-Caribbean dance and drumming genre native to Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, where many of our members have ancestors or family. The class includes a strong education and cultural component. The program continues to celebrate varied cultures and backgrounds with its most recent special arts activity, an April 2013 production of the Broadway musical “In the Heights,” which presents a vibrant slice of life in a Dominican community, starring 35 young Club members. The show’s creator, Lin-Manuel Miranda, attended rehearsals and made mentoring visits with our young performers, inspiring our children and offering his important perspective on a career in the performing arts.
The performing arts programs at Kips Bay are some of our most popular and dynamic activities. The dance program is comprised of 4 teams for ages 6-18. Our dance instruction is structured to enhance children’s confidence and encourage them to stay fit. In addition to learning exercise and teamwork skills, the program gives children a chance to shine through featured performances throughout the year.
With multiple performances a year, the drama program lets our kids of all ages shine. Our two latest productions were of the award-winning musical, Elton John and Tim Rice’s “Aida,” and of the Disney musical spectacular “Aladdin.” The program has grown exponentially since it was founded in the early 1980s by Lorenzo Maldonado, a young Ballet Hispanico dancer who lived in the community.
K-Company was created 22 years ago to allow the talented dancers and singers thriving in the Performing Arts Program to express and share their love of the arts with the community. The companies have graced audiences nationwide and are frequently requested for performances throughout the tri-state area and beyond. Company members excel in dance and singing, and receive dedicated training in these areas.
