The Cardinal McCloskey Community Charter School is one of the latest units of The Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club. We offer an after-school program tailored to children attending Cardinal McCloskey School. Our program is dedicated to enhancing academic, social, and emotional learning through a variety of engaging, hands-on activities. Members are equipped with skills that promote academic success and can be applied across different areas of their lives. Additionally, each day begins with a warm meal or snack before any activities commence.
Homework Help
Program staff provide homework assistance four days a week for 45 minutes. During this time, staff circulate and monitor children as they work independently, helping them to complete as many assignments as possible before transitioning to the next activity.
Physical Recreation
Program staff utilize the Boys & Girls Club’s Triple Play curriculum to facilitate a holistic approach to healthy lifestyles for youth. This curriculum is divided into three key concepts:
-
Mind: This component focuses on Healthy Habits, teaching members the importance of proper hygiene, healthy and unhealthy foods, and appropriate meal portions.
-
Body: The Body concept emphasizes daily exercise challenges, including push-ups, jumping jacks, and sit-ups, to ensure members stay physically active.
-
Soul: This aspect teaches the importance of teamwork, sportsmanship, and effective communication, helping members develop a well-rounded approach to personal growth and social interactions.
Social Recreation
Members also engage in board games and creative play, fostering healthy competition and creativity. This activity helps members develop a sense of sportsmanship and participate in social-emotional learning as they interact with their peers.
It provides opportunities for members to demonstrate fairness and citizenship while learning to operate effectively in social settings.
DIY Stem
Our STEM curriculum emphasizes Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Each week, members participate in engaging activities and experiments centered around these core areas, allowing them to explore and develop skills in at least one of the four components.
Dance
Members explore various forms of dance, gaining insights into diverse cultures while staying physically active. Under the guidance of the Dance Specialist, participants will learn about rhythm, beats, and counts in music.
This program encourages self-expression through dance and builds self-esteem and confidence as members perform on stage and in front of an audience.
Arts & Crafts
Arts & Crafts encompasses monthly themes throughout the school year, offering members the chance to express their creativity through various art forms. This program supports social-emotional learning by encouraging creative expression through painting, drawing, sculpting, and other artistic activities. It fosters each member’s voice and individuality, allowing them to explore and showcase their unique artistic talents.
Healthy Habits
Healthy Habits teaches our members the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. The curriculum covers healthy eating, regular exercise, and keeping a positive mindset regarding healthy lifestyles.
